Snowdome Foundation Funds Groundbreaking Blood Cancer Research

The Snowdome Foundation is proud to support a pioneering research project led by Dr Paul Yeh at Monash University and Monash Health, aimed at stopping aggressive blood cancers before they begin.

Dr Yeh’s project focuses on understanding how certain early, symptom free blood conditions can develop into life threatening cancers such as myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). These cancers are particularly challenging to treat, with only around one in four patients surviving beyond five years.

Many older adults carry subtle genetic changes in their blood, a pre-malignant condition known as clonal haematopoiesis. While most people with this condition never become unwell, a small proportion goes on to develop serious blood cancers. At present, doctors have no reliable way to predict who is at risk.

This Snowdome funded research aims to change that.

Rather than looking only at genetic mutations, Dr Yeh’s team will study epigenetics, the chemical switches that turn genes on and off. These switches play a crucial role in how cells behave, and abnormal patterns are believed to drive the transition from harmless blood changes to cancer.

Using advanced sequencing technology, the team will analyse millions of these epigenetic switches in blood and bone marrow samples from patients. By comparing people with early stage changes to those already diagnosed with MDS or AML, they hope to identify a clear molecular signature that signals when cancer is about to develop.

“If we can detect these dangerous changes early, it opens the door to monitoring patients more closely and potentially intervening before cancer ever takes hold,” said Dr Yeh.

Importantly, the patient samples needed for the study have already been collected through existing collaborations, allowing the research to move quickly. The funding will support specialist laboratory scientists and bioinformatics experts who will analyse the complex data generated by the project.

Dr Yeh is both a clinician and a researcher, caring for patients while leading the Blood Cancer Biomarkers Laboratory at Monash University. His work has already contributed to new diagnostic tests used in Australian hospitals, and this project builds on that strong track record of translating research into real world impact.

The Snowdome Foundation’s support of this project reflects its commitment to funding innovative research that can make a meaningful difference for people affected by blood cancer.

This research has the potential to reshape how blood cancers are detected, managed, and ultimately avoided, making hope real for patients and families in the years ahead.
