Susi Doherty changing community, changing lives

Susi Doherty is another inspiring volunteer who is changing a community and changing lives.

Out of adversity Susi Doherty has helped champion a blood cancer research centre in Western Australia to help change lives and a community.

Sadly, Susi lost her daughter Rachael to lymphoma after an eight year journey with the disease. Rachael was diagnosed at 17 and by 19 she had exhausted all treatment options in WA, her only hope was to access clinical trials, but WA did not have a trial centre. For the next 6 years Rachael flew to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre every two weeks, with her mum Susi by her side. They were not alone, 75 other families from Perth were making the same journey for treatment in Victoria.

The Rachael Doherty Foundation was established to assist blood cancer patients in WA access the treatments they need. Susi donated the funds raised to Snowdome to assist in the establishment of Blood Cancer Research WA. There are now more than 20 blood cancer trials open in WA. Susi has truly helped change lives and a whole WA community through her volunteer work.
