2024 Cannon Family Travel Grant Awardees

The Snowdome Foundation is pleased to announce that Dr Edward Cliff and Dr Hansen Kosasih have been awarded 2024 Cannon Family Travel Grants.

Dr Edward Cliff is a second-year clinical haematology registrar at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Royal Melbourne Hospital, and a dedicated clinician researcher for lymphoma and myeloma. Using his Cannon Family Travel Grant, Dr Cliff recently travelled to the American Society of Haematology (ASH) annual meeting in San Diego, USA. This pre-eminent global haematology event is the world’s largest and most comprehensive haematology event, featuring 7,950 abstracts.

Dr Cliff leads six of those abstracts, including one oral presentation. He is looking forward to joining key events with his global colleagues and discussing the latest clinical trial results.

Dr Hansen Kosasih is a Senior Research Officer at the Children’s Cancer Institute in Sydney. He will be using his Cannon Family Travel Grant to attend the 2025 Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in Italy. The GRC is a premier international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research.

Dr Kosasih is currently investigating the novel pro-drug ACHM-025 in paediatric T-cell and B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and is now looking to present his findings internationally. This will allow him to obtain feedback from world-leading experts in the field and establish new collaborations that will improve the impact of his project, something which he will be able to achieve through his attendance at GRC.

Snowdome would like to thank the Cannon family for their continued support of Australian blood cancer researchers. The Cannon Family Travel Grants were established through the estate of Dr Bob Cannon OAM and Dr Jean Cannon after their daughter Jill was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2011.

Dr Bob Cannon OAM and Dr Jean Cannon first met while studying Dentistry at the University of Melbourne where they both obtained their Master’s degrees. Jean was the first woman in Australia to achieve her Master’s by research and the third woman to be awarded her Master’s degree in Dentistry. Jean then went on and trained as an Orthodontist.

Bob won a scholarship to study for his Doctorate in Dentistry in Canada and became a world authority in crown and bridgework. He was very innovative in the way he practised dentistry and in 1991 was awarded an OAM for his services to dentistry. Bob and Jean raised three children, Jill, Stuart and Andrew. They believed it was very important to give back to their community and instilled this in their children. In Bob and Jean’s honour, the Cannon Family Travel Grants were established.
